DIY Pallet Fireplace/Mantle

Noni

I am finally posting my pictures of my DIY pallet fireplace! I’m so glad we got to enjoy our free fireplace. December has just gone by way to fast, what gives?! (lots of photos coming!)

Edit: I also added boards in the front, across the bottom. You could add some at the top right under the mantel and around the ‘fire’ opening. These extra steps will make it look a lot more realistic but aren’t required. I put the whole thing on top of some extra tile had tile and that helped the stability and made it look more real.

The black part of the opening is just a big card board box I had and spray painted it black and taped it to the wood in the back. I didn’t make it any sturdier or more permanent because I want to be able to store it and use it again.
I used a tin box and filled it with tree trimmings and candles. Logs would look great too.

Its not perfect, but it was pretty sturdy as long as it has a solid base under it. I made it this way so that I can disassemble it and store it easier, the top part (shelf) isn’t even attached to the bottom piece but you can’t tell just by looking at it.

Here is what it looks like in the back:

The hardest part of the job was breaking the pallet apart and we just used a sawzall with a pretty tough blade to cut the individual boards off the pallet.
So the easiest way to explain it is that once the boards cut the same size they just need to be secured to a simple frame in the back. I literally just used the wood from the pallet and scrap pieces, as you can tell.
We  hammered boards to hold it together in the back and obviously didn’t bother sanding it. I made sure it was level up and down and across.

I had 2 Ikea lack shelves just sitting in the garage, this is what they look like:
living rooms - Benjamin Moore - Shaker Beige - Ikea Lack Shelves World Market Verona Buffet Bar wine rack shaker beige Living room Bar Areaimage via And I just set one of them right on top of the fireplace.

I also used a big box for the opening,  made sure it was big enough to fit and spray painted it black.

And thats it! I know its not very hard core or labor intensive but thats ok since I am not going to be using it all year. People seem to think its cute, and it sure added that missing something right next to my Christmas tree! My sister loved it so much that we made one for her too, which she painted white. I love it!

    Hi Noni,
Here it is 2017 and I just came across your pallet fireplace. I just love it and the ingenuity of it all. Great job.
One question is it free standing and therefore you didn’t have to worry about adjusting baseboard to make it fit?
    Thank you, Shirley

Hi Shirley! Thank you so much! Yes it’s free standing, I had some spare tile laying around and put it on top of it. Hope that helps! Glad you stopped by!

Thanks for the inspiration! I made mine out of leftover cedar planks from our sauna, leftover tile from the bathroom, and an old cabinet shelf. I didn’t have to cut anything and only used 4 screws as the rest is glued or only temporarily tacked together.
