DIY Rustic Vase

Recently I’ve been noticing alot of designers using big, rustic, earthy, looking vases that I absolutely love. I know they have always been used but for some reason I am really loving them right now and feel like they would be perfect in my house and yours too! I actually haven’t checked to see how much they are because I decided I wanted to try a DIY with things that can be found at the thrift store and hardware store. Here are some great examples that caught my eye:

I wanted to see what I could find at the thrift store because there are always so many vases when I go! Here are just a few I saw:

I got these two to experiment on

I honestly just wanted to find material that anyone could probably find while thrifting and luckily I found some non-sanded Polyblend https://amzn.to/3c4aqbZ grout and terracota texture paint https://amzn.to/32vA9WN that I experimented with. You could probably get the same results with different colors of chalk paint, minus the texture. You could also try regular grout, plaster, maybe even Sheetrock mud. The trick is to FIRST get it to stick to the glass. The texture paint worked surprisingly well, I was really happy about it!!

And here is the perfect vase that I found to do the final process on and it was perfect! Not bad for $3!

Here are the simple steps I did:

  • Washed it very well
  • Thinned down the texture paint with just a tiny bit of water and painted one layer on the vases
  • After it was dry, I used a knife to layer on the grout that was a consistency of a thin frosting. I didn’t worry about making it smooth.
  • Once it the grout was dry, I sanded the texture down a little bit.
  • (On the darker vase, I added a little bit of black chalk paint for color and added it as the second grout layer.) https://amzn.to/2VcUHS9
  • Did another layer of grout and dried and sanded again.
  • Sprayed on a layer of matte finish spray (https://amzn.to/2T8QR9Z )
The texture paint straight from the container, kinda thick.
All covered in the texture
The texture after I watered it down with water.
This is the grout, a thinner consistency
Charcoal paint and the Finish I used

And that’s it! It was seriously so easy! The hardest part is just waiting for them to dry. Here is how the two little vases came out:

The darker one has a lot more texture and I love it!
I’m pretty dang happy with them!

And here is the big guy! Needless to say, I’m OBSESSED.

I wanted it mostly white with just a hint of a color underneath
Love the subtle texture
Love the matte finish

So what do you guys think? Think you would try it?! I just cant resist an easy and cheap DIY! Let me know and feel free to share this!
